Monday #9- Steve Huntley columnist #3

In this article, Steve Huntley claims that Obama's actions don't back up his speeches. He claims that Obama is being hypocritical when he talks about the need for action of creating new jobs, yet is delaying large construction projects that would generate jobs, such as the Keystone pipeline. He also thinks that there needs to be a fundamental reform in Washington in taxes and closing loopholes to restrict lobbyists. Finally, he thinks that Obama's pushing temporary fixes that aren't effective.

Monday #9- Steve Huntley columnist #2

In "Obama's political goals bad for us all", Steve Huntley expresses his opinion that Obama has been trying to do the wrong things and isn't helping the country. He believes that Obama hasn't been doing what the voters wanted him to do, and instead of promoting bipartisanship, has been widening the gap between Democrats and Republicans. He conveys this by providing a fairly one-sided approach to Obama's policies and didn't show both the good and the bad. Also, he used terminology such as "spread the wealth around" and "income redistributive model of European welfare states" which would cast an unfavorable light on the Obama administration.

Monday #8- Steve Huntley columnist #1

Steve Huntley of the Chicago Sun-Times, writes in this column about how he agrees with Newt Gingrich's policies on Iran. He believes that if it comes down to it, America should attack Iran to keep it from developing Nuclear weapons. He also acknowledges that if it happens, it wouldn't be a singular quick attack, but a prolonged series of attacks. Iran has a more developed military and better defended Nuclear plants than Syria or Iraq who had their nuclear programs derailed by Israeli attacks. He also thinks there could be other ways to derail their program without too much violence by restricting their oil imports.

Monday #7-Food safety 4

This graph reveals a few very important things. For one thing, despite falling since 1993 risky food consumption has actually gone up since 1998, despite more publicized illnesses related to food. Raw fish consumption has actually gone up since 1993 Surprisingly, in 1993 over half of the population had eaten raw eggs, and while lower in 2001, made up more than 40% of the nation. This graph also has faults, though. It's out of date by 10 years, so the numbers could have changed a lot since then. It also doesn't focus on the food that often is publicized to have dangerous diseases in them. They are ironically not the most dangerous foods, but other foods, even some considered healthy,

Monday #6- Food Safety 3

In the article "Additional Food Regulation is not Needed", by David E. Gumpert, he stresses that despite common news stories about foodborne illnesses, there isn't a lot of information to back up, with much of the statements by the FDA being very vague data. Also, existing data on the subject is out of date and inaccurate, built on wide estimates and outdated information. Some more recent studies have even shown that the rate of illness has gone down since then. Finally, he also stresses that more FDA regulations hurt small businesses by increasing costs and work, as well as possibly infringing on personal rights, such as protection against searches without a reason or a warrant.

Monday #5 Food safety 2

In the article "New Food Technologies are Safer than Older Ones", by Thomas R. DeGregori, he argues that food is no more dangerous now than before. He argues that people are filled with false fear by the media and people trying to spread this fear. He also says that many things that people are afraid of being done in growing food, has already been done for a long time. Also, this article says that there is no way to avoid, or to have avoided in the past consuming small amounts of toxins.  Finally, many of the more dangerous foods are some of the older, traditional foods and herbs.

In the article "Congress Must Reform America's Food Safety System" by  Caroline Smith DeWaal, she stresses  that Congress needs to reform the actions taken to make sure food is safe. She says that the laws created that lets the FDA make sure food is safe are outdated and don't properly cover the dangers. Also, food outbreak can effect many different types of food, including healthy food, and when healthy food is effected, less people buy it, endangering their health. Finally, she believes that the main consequences fall onto the consumer, who can be afflicted with costly, painful, and with possible lasting effects, or death.

News You can use- Picture- Monday #3

Ground zero spirit [2001]

This picture has a huge contrast between the American flag and the destroyed background. This highlights the hope for the future compared to the devastation of 9/11. The background is all grey and covers the whole background, showing that the disaster isn't over yet, but there's still hope. The brightness of the flag and the bold colors of the firefighters make them stand out fro the disaster and show they're trying to help. They're determined faces also stand out to show that they're just people trying to help out.

News You Can Use- Editorial- Monday #2

http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/17/michael-ohanlon-national-security-super-committee/?hpt=hp_t1

In this editorial, the author believes that the deficit reduction plan that Obama is trying to pass is fair, but fears that the republicans in the committee that has to approve it may try to keep it from being approved because of tax increases for the wealthy in it. If this happens, he thinks the democrats should try to pass what they can and let the next election be a referendum. He also believes that breaking apart the committee would be a bad idea because it would put national security at risk. He finally believes that if the democrats try to keep a deal from happening if they don't get the tax increases, it would make a lot of Americans angry at them and keep other federal programs from working well.

Israel currently is having problems with two countries near it, Turkey and Egypt. In Egypt, the Israeli Embassy was just violently shut down, amid protests. This was a continuation of the overthrow of the Egyptian government. Turkey, also, recently expelled Israeli diplomats, a continuation of hostilities that started last year after several Turkish activists were killed in a clash that broke out on a ship trying to break through the Gaza blockade.
